I dont think they were cannibal vampires, just zombies that don't like the sun.
The guy tries to come up with a antidote that turns the zombie people back into humans. Not just a cure for cancer. And he uses dead test subjects to see which cure works. Everyday he sends out a message over the radio stating he is survivor of the outbreak and are there any other survivors alive as well. Well this woman and her son hear his message and finds him and they all share their stories. The woman tells the guy about a hidden settlement in the north full of survivors. The guy does not believe them and just ignores the theory. Well later on the zombie-vampire things infiltrate his house and the guy,woman, and her son all run down to the laboratory. Then the guy notices that one of his test subjects has been cured. So he extracts the blood of the dead test subject and gives it to the woman telling her to go find the settlement in the north and present them the cure. While the woman and her son are hiding in a passage/tunnel in the wall, the guy takes a grenade and sacrifices his life to blow up all the zombie creatures in his house, so the woman and her son can live. Then at the end the woman and her son find the hidden settlement of survivors. The End.
